Raffaele Onorato pratica attivamente la speleologia dal 1977, ha ricoperto ruoli e incarichi a livello regionale e per dodici anni è stato responsabile del Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico per Puglia, Basilicata e Calabria. Ha scritto numerose pubblicazioni e articoli tecnici, scientifici e divulgativi sulla speleologia e la speleo-subacquea.
Nel 2021 ha dato alle stampe “Dove osano le anguille” un condensato di storie vere che l’autore definisce come “…dei racconti intorno ad un fuoco…”; infatti l’atmosfera che il lettore percepisce è proprio quella che si avrebbe stando seduti intorno ad un fuoco in una tiepida sera primaverile raccontando e raccontandosi fatti vissuti durante le innumerevoli esplorazioni in ambienti ipogei sommersi.

Non sono mai stato attratto oltremodo dalle cavità marine sommerse, ma questo libro mi ha fatto ricredere facendomi scoprire un fascino incredibile misto alla percezione di una difficoltà davvero super. Raffaele in questo suo compendio di racconti lo fa con un linguaggio semplice e coinvolgente ma senza alleggerire oltremodo il pericolo e la necessaria e dovuta preparazione che bisogna possedere per poter fare questo tipo di immersioni.
Un viaggio alla scoperta delle “spunnulate” salentine, ossia il cedimento della parte superiore di una cavità sommersa a causa dell’azione combinata prima dell’acqua dolce e poi di quella salata. Si tratta di un habitat unico nel suo genere, tipicamente salentino, racchiuso in quella fascia di costiera che va dalla zona compresa tra l’area “Palude del Conte” e località Torre Castiglione, all’interno dell’Area Marina Protetta di Porto Cesareo. Esse rappresentano un interessante unicum dal profilo geologico, botanico, faunistico e paesaggistico di questa parte di Salento.
I’ve never been overly attracted by submerged marine cavities, but this book made me change my mind by making me discover an incredible charm mixed with the perception of a really super difficulty. Raffaele in his compendium of stories does it with simple and engaging language but without overly lightening the danger and the necessary and due preparation that one must possess in order to do this type of diving.
A journey to discover the “spunnulate” of Salento, i.e. the collapse of the upper part of a submerged cavity due to the combined action first of fresh water and then of salt water. It is a unique habitat of its kind, typically Salento, enclosed in that coastal strip that goes from the area between the “Palude del Conte” area and Torre Castiglione, within the Marine Protected Area of Porto Cesareo. They represent an interesting unicum from the geological, botanical, faunal and landscape profile of this part of Salento.
