Recensione Orcatorch D710

I received a wonderful and unexpected gift from Franco Tulli and Miranda Narduzzi dell’Emporio del Pescatore in Rome: a flashlight, model D710 by Orcatorch.

The package reflects a good care product which is housed in a comfortable and practical clutch bag zipper inside we find the flashlight with three spare o-rings, the handy wrist strap and a USB cable to recharge the 5000 mAh battery equipped with a recharge circuit with a LED that indicates its status.

The curiosity to turn it on, albeit out of the water, is great: I am immediately struck, despite being two in the afternoon, by the quality of the light: a clean beam formed by a fairly strong center in terms of intensity and a second halo that widens gradually and uniformly towards the outside. The angle beam is 9 degrees on my measurement.

I carry out a test with a Luximeter to determine its power as well as the coverage angle: the factory declaration is 3000 lumens at maximum power and an angle of 7 degrees.

In the past I happened to carry out tests on other Made in China products and the results were below the declarations; in this product I had to change my mind. First of all, what struck me was the stability of the power supply circuit and control of the emission of the luminous flux at each power: the torch has three power levels. This determined that the fluctuations in the luminous flux were contained between 10 and 100 lumens. The value detected by the luximeter was 5400 lumens at maximum power (Turbo), 4150 lumens at intermediate power and 1650 lumens at minimum power. Just to be precise, these parameters are susceptible to variation based on the humidity of the air and the temperature which in my case was 23.8 ° C.

After some time I manage to take it underwater with the clear aim of putting it to the test: daytime dive in full sun and with visibility of 30 meters but at a low depth, 5 meters. The light beam, pointed towards the seabed, is clearly visible at a distance of 1 meter, so much so that I pushed to use it to photograph a beautiful specimen of Owl Fish (Dactylopterus volitans) with the shooting settings for ambient light (ISO 100, 1 / 100s, ƒ11 ) so that you can “see” the light beam on the subject.

I want to point out immediately that in the Orcatorch catalog this product is not among those indicated for Photosub uses; but in generic ones.

You know, the appetite comes with eating, so during the two dives I decide to use the D710 as a light source, alternating it with the usual strobes.

I decided to use two different configurations: one with the Tokina 10-17 and one with the Nikkor 40mm macro.

In use with the Tokina, at the focal length of 14mm, I found almost no difference between the Orcatorch D710 and the snoot that I usually use combined with the Sea & Sea Ys-D2J: shutter speed of 1 / 250s at 100 ISO and with an aperture of ƒ13 .

With the Nikkor 40mm macro or wanted to use the Orcatorch D710 in backlight mode combined with a flash shot at minimum power as a lightening, 1 / 320s at 100 ISO and with an aperture of ƒ13: I did not want the classic “radiography” effect of the seahorse (Hyppocampus guttulatus). Effect instead tried and liked, pictured with the dogfish egg (Scyliorhinus canicula) transparency to highlight the live embryo inside: ISO 160, 1 / 50s to ƒ11.

The Orcatorch D710 has rightfully entered my setup: an extremely versatile torch also from a photographic point of view and use: the quality of the light allows for well-balanced chromatic tones without dangerous “slips” towards red; has proved to be an excellent illuminator both in macro lens shooting where it gives its best given its reduced angle of beam, but which can also be effectively used in CFWA, close-up wide-angle shooting, especially with subjects such as seahorses but also smaller. A valid alternative to many miniflash on the market that give unsatisfactory results when used with DSLR cameras.

The next test will involve the application of two accessories that I am making, but that’s another story.

You can buy the Orcatorch D710 at the Emporio del Pescatore in Rome, but you can also order it to have it shipped to your home; the reliability and versatility are worth the purchase price.
